How do we know the actions we make is going to hurt us?

QUESTION: When Hz Ayub AS was tested and he felt the pain only when he put back the leech that fell. Then Allah SWT says that with whatever test was given to him the needed patience was also given but when he put the leech back he did that to himself. How are we to take a lesson from this? How do we know the actions we make is going to hurt us?
